Views from the Sopramonte hill

The territory where Prato Sesia stands was occupied in prehistoric times by a warm subtropical sea. Evidence of this presence is the numerous fossil fauna found in the Vaglio region, within the Monte Fenera Natural Park, dating back to 3.5 million years ago, and certainly one of the most interesting in the foothill area.
According to some historians, in Prato Sesia, around 1270, was born the singular figure of heretic, half-preacher and half-bandit, who was Fra Dolcino.
Among the historic buildings of Prato Sesia, the Parish Church of St. Bernard is very ancient, with records dating back to the 14th century. The right chapel, called the "rosary chapel", has three aisles and is the most frescoed: it depicts scenes from the life of Jesus painted by a painter from Romagna: Tarquinio Grassi, in 1713. It was restored by Bramante, with the collaboration of other painters. The left chapel, called the "chapel of Santa Marta", is enriched with decorated bas-reliefs depicting the four cardinal virtues: Prudence, Justice, Fortitude, and Temperance, created towards the end of the 18th century, the author of which is unknown.
The village’s organ is one of the most beautiful in the area and consists of no less than 1468 pipes and is able to simulate the sounds of flutes and string instruments.
The Chiesetta della natività di Maria Vergine also known simply as the "little church of the castle" is the most loved by the locals, certainly for its suggestive position high on the hill, surrounded by the ruins of the old castle whose original core dates back to at least the 12th century.
It is dedicated to the nativity of Mary and houses a wooden statue of the Madonna, said to come from the ruins of the castle fire.
Near the little church of the castle stands the medieval watchtower of the castle of Sopramonte about 29 meters high and still well preserved but not visitable, a symbol of the village.
Behind the little church are the remains of a castle: "i casaci". Legend has it that a gallery connects it to the Castle of San Lorenzo, on the hill of Gattinara. The entrance to this gallery is located under "i casaci", on the side facing north.
From this position, the view of the village below and the mountains on the horizon, with the Rosa as the protagonist, deserves a stop.
Before our eyes is also the area of the Supervolcano of the Sesia, where the more observant eyes can spot some rocky outcrops of the earth's core.
To fully enjoy the view from the hill of Sopramonte, the Giant Bench n. 127 has been placed here, reachable on foot from the town center.
