Colle valdobbia, 13021 Alagna Valsesia

The Ospizio Sottile Refuge is located at an altitude of 2,480 m on the Colle Valdobbia, along the route that connects the Vogna Valley and the Valsesia with the Gressoney Valley, Piedmont, and the Aosta Valley. The Sottile refuge is the ideal place for a stay of tranquility in a wild and unspoiled alpine environment and represents an excellent base for ascents, scenic walks, and excursions. HOW IT WAS FOUNDED: Canon Nicolao Sottile was well aware of the situation at that unfortunate pass. A disaster in 1820 led him to construct the Hospice at his own expense, which was completed in 1823 and became the highest in the Alps. The canon kept it open during the winter period from 1822 to 1831, and subsequently from 1833 to 1856, Giacomo Clerino, a former Napoleonic soldier, undertook the hard task of custodian there.
