Alta Valsesia Natural Park

The highest natural park in Europe

Alta Valsesia Natural Park is one of the quintessential alpine parks: established in 1979, it extends from the 880 meters of Fobello to the 4,554 meters of Punta Gnifetti, thus becoming the highest park in Europe. Obviously, the Monte Rosa and its glaciers provide a wonderful backdrop at any point in the park and can give a unique emotion.

Established in 1979, it extends from the 880 meters of Fobello to the 4,554 meters of Punta Gnifetti, thus becoming the highest park in Europe.

The Park is characterized by glacial morphology: the glaciers not only make the alpine scenery suggestive but also influence the entire ecosystem of the Park. The vegetation is that typical of the alpine and subalpine level: there are larch forests and alpine meadows, while in areas not affected by glaciers, the typical mountain-level vegetation with dense beech and spruce forests is present. The fauna of the park, easily observable during excursions, includes ibexes, chamois, marmots, roe deer, black grouse, and hares, all “monitored” by majestic golden eagles. The western and northwestern boundaries of the Park run along the watershed that separates Valsesia from the Gressoney Valley, the Swiss territory, and the Anzasca Valley, while to the east it borders the alpine ridge of the Monte Rosa massif. The protected area extends over approximately 6,500 hectares and covers the headwaters of Valsesia, Val Sermenza, and Val Mastallone, involving the municipalities of Alagna, Rima, Carcoforo, Rimasco, Fobello, and Rimella.
