Monte Tagliaferro is located on the mountain ridge descending from the Gnifetti peak of Monte Rosa, separating the municipality of Alagna Valsesia from Alto Sermenza in Val Sermenza. Among the most famous peaks in the Valsesia, it has a perfectly pyramidal shape seen from Val d'Otro and Colle del Termo. Slender and pointed, it is also visible from the Po Valley, even from Milan.

The view from the summit is superb and particularly interesting towards the nearby Monte Rosa. This itinerary is the normal route to climb Monte Tagliaferro. Due to its steepness, exposure, and length, it is a trail not to be underestimated and should be considered almost alpine. In fact, in the upper part, from Vallarolo to the summit, the route presents significant difficulties due to its length and especially the steepness of the path, which is at times steep and very exposed. It is reserved for experienced hikers with adequate training who do not have problems with vertigo.

From Rima (1411 m), follow trail 292 and then 296 (to Colle di Mud) up to about 1700 m. From here, leave the mule track and continue on the 318 trail which crosses the Torrente Valmontasca to the left and climbs to Alpe Scarpia di Sotto (1712 m) and then to Alpe Scarpia di Sopra (1916 m). From the alp, move left to cross the stream coming from the Passo del Vallarolo and reach a large boulder near which a spring flows and on which there is a plaque. Climbing left through small fountains, pastures, and slabs, reach the Passo del Vallarolo (2332 m) to follow itinerary 318 west, reaching a giant dark rock that offers natural shelter.

The path increases in steepness until it zigzags under the vertical of a very steep grassy slope, where, with tight and exposed bends, you gain the airborne Passo del Gatto (2730 m). From here, follow the path northwest that cuts across the mountainside and reach the southern ridge of shattered rocks and stones leading to the summit of Monte Tagliaferro with the characteristic Madonnina di Vetta (2964 m).
