Heavily frequented throughout the year, the Res is one of the classic Varallo hikes and also a destination for the historic trail running competition
The hike starts from the parish church of Crevola (a fraction of Varallo located at an altitude of 441 m). Alternatively, it is possible to drive up to the Casavei area. From the village, following the main road towards Parone, turn right at house number 134 into a narrow street that leads to the entrance of the trail 605. You climb until you intersect the Crevola-Parone road. At this point, follow the path on the right until you reach the Alpe Cerei (708 m). After a short stretch through the forest, you arrive at a beautiful beech grove that leads to Casavei (809 m), which can also be reached by car and serves as an alternative starting point for those who wish to reduce the elevation gain. You continue on a mule track, later emerging onto the dirt road, which you follow until Alpe Campo (1090 m), where you come to a fork with trail 603a, which we ignore to continue on 605. Continue past Alpe Volpera, and, through a beautiful staircase carved into the rock, you arrive at the Alpe del Pastore or Alpe Res at 1216 m. Stop for five minutes to admire the enormous lime tree and the small chapel, then resume your hike, crossing the Riale stream and proceeding in switchbacks until you reach the Rifugio Spanna-Osella, managed by the Valsesiana Section of the National Alpine Association. Continuing and following the signs, you reach the summit in a few minutes (1631 m).
