Hike to Barba Ferrero Refuge

Perched on the right bank of the Flua stream, near the rocky step that supports the mighty lateral moraine of the Sesia and Locce glaciers, the Barba Ferrero Refuge (2240 m) is like an eagle's nest overlooking the valley.

The location and the exposure of the rich pasture suggest ancient origins, dating back to the early 1700s, but the current Refuge was built only at the end of the 1960s and renovated in the 2010s. The entire hike is a delight for the eyes, which can rest on the glaciers of Monte Rosa.

From the Acqua Bianca square (1450 m, accessible only on foot or by shuttle from the Wold car park), you can choose to take the most direct route or treat yourself to a more scenic one.

For the first, follow trail 7, which passes by Alpe Fum Bitz and continues along the left bank of the Sesia then the Flusa streams, crossing a small bridge just before a little chapel. From here, the path becomes steeper and skirts the rocky bastion to reach the refuge.

Alternatively, take the comfortable mule track 7a that leads to the Colle del Turlo; follow it up to 1940 meters, where, just after lower Mittentail Alp and next to a stream, you turn left onto a steeper path (7d) that ascends to the pasture Testa Nera, the highest point of the excursion at 2260 m. From here, a gentle and scenic up and down along trail 7d leads to the Barba Ferrero Refuge. You then descend via the previously described main path of the refuge and can choose to detour to the Pastore Refuge (1575 m) or return directly to the car park.
