Ski mountaineering in the Val d'Egua
Carcoforo, a charming village at an altitude of 1,304 meters, is located at the end of the short Val d'Egua, which is a side valley of Val Sermenza, itself a side valley of Valsesia. The Colle della Bottigia was historically used as a communication route between Val Sermenza and Macugnaga, in Valle Anzasca, for trade and mining exchanges.

The ascent takes place in a solitary and silent alpine amphitheater, made even more evocative in winter by the presence of snow. From the pass, a memorable panorama opens up over Val Quarazza, the southern and eastern slopes of Monte Rosa, and the peaks of Valle Ossola.
Drive to the village of Carcoforo and, after leaving the vehicle, cross the new bridge at the beginning of the square, following the flat section to the right of the stream that leads to the nearby Coste hut. Reach Alpe Chignolo by crossing Croso Giovanchera and Croso Massero, then ascend a steep but achievable slope with skis on, following the often-marked trail up to a saddle. Then cross a channel to climb up below a band of rocks to reach, through a steep gully, the slopes of Alpe Fornetto at 1,626 meters. From here, turn right and ascend the valley to Alpe Massero (2,082 m), where the new Hut-Rifugio of the Alta Valsesia Natural Park is located. You're not far from the goal: after going through a series of small valleys, you will skirt the northeastern spur of Montevecchio and reach the entrance to the final valley, arriving with skins and skis on to the pass. Before heading back, traversing the ascent route and taking advantage of the slopes for some nice turns, a photo of the surrounding panorama that directly overlooks the eastern face of the Rosa is a must.
Safety in the mountains
Living and experiencing the mountains requires caution, preparation, and experience. No activity, even the easiest one, should be taken for granted or improvised.
