Ski mountaineering with a view of Monte Rosa
Although commonly referred to as Piccolo Altare, the name actually refers to the peak located to the east of the pass that overlooks it. The name derives from the characteristic squared rock (in the shape of an altar) which is located a few dozen meters further east, on the ridge and clearly visible.

Rima (1,411m)
Colle del Piccolo Altare (2,627 m)
approximately 1,216 meters
This is a classic ski mountaineering route with a highly satisfying descent, feasible even at the beginning of the season with stable conditions: the avalanche danger, in fact, only exists in the final part (beyond 2,100 meters). From the pass, located between the peaks of Corno Piglimò (2,894m) and the long ridge of Cima del Piccolo Altare, there is a magnificent view of Monte Rosa.
From Rima, you reach the bridge behind the village to cross the Sermenza stream, then following its right bank. Once at the center of the amphitheater, you pass two small bridges to follow the path that climbs up the mountainside among the shrubs. After passing a solitary hut, you reach Alpe Lanciole di Sotto at an altitude of 1,710 m to continue along the ridge. The vegetation becomes increasingly sparse, until about 1,950 meters where it bends to the right and with a wide semicircle goes around the Alpeggio Lavazei. Keeping the huts on the right, you climb north until you encounter a rocky bastion that can be easily crossed. From an altitude of 2,250 meters, you turn west entering the valley that leads to the pass, where you also find the dilapidated and no longer accessible Bivacco Axerio.
Safety in the mountains
Living and experiencing the mountains requires caution, preparation, and experience. No activity, even the easiest, should be taken for granted or improvised.
