Cavallirio

Discovering the wine huts

The name Cavallirio has traditionally been linked to the horse, an animal that therefore appears on the municipal coat of arms. Some scholars hypothesize that the origin of the name dates back to Curticella de cavalli regis, mentioned in the diploma of Conrad II (1025) for the Bishop of Novara and that it referred to a place where 'the King's horses' (i.e., those of the barbaric sovereigns) were raised, also due to the presence of the locality Stoccada (from the German Studegarde meaning horse enclosure).

The inhabited area of Cavallirio is made up of the districts of Piatè, Cademarco and Suloro which align along the slopes of the hill and from Villa and Caditogno, in the plain to the south-east, while the only hamlet immersed in the greenery of the Cavallirian countryside is Stoccada.

The territory offers the possibility of hiking and cycling along the paths of the Fenera Park and the Baragge Nature Reserve.

Among the buildings of interest is the Parish Church, which was rebuilt with three naves in the early years of the 18th century, outside of which is the Ossuary that houses notable frescoes from the 18th century.

On the hills, in a parallel position to each other and facing the village, stand the "Tre Madonnine", chapels dating back to the mid-1800s and restored in the mid-1900s, which are to be considered, along with the small church of San Germano, one of the symbols of Cavallirio.

At 469 meters above sea level, in a dominant and strategic position, are the remains of the Tower of Cavallirio. It is hypothesized that the oldest tower dates back to the 11th-12th century and that after its collapse, it was rebuilt around the 17th century.

On the hills, in the places of the ancient vineyards, stand the wine huts: these are modest-sized structures with a square or rectangular plan, with one or more rooms divided over two floors, built starting from 1800. They are generally located in the highest area of the cultivated hill, initially used as shelters for tools or hay, later also as a second home for farmers.

The name of the hut could derive from family ownership or indicate a particular characteristic or symbol such as, for example, the crescent moon or the bottle, related to good fortune or the abundance of the harvests.
