Luoghi, attività e idee per vivere la Valsesia.
The highest municipality in Valsesia
The character of the place, the location nestled in the bottom of an open valley, the stylistically rich living profile, the absence of pollution, pure air, and limited traffic, make Carcoforo a destination to discover.
A sunny green basin frames the village, among basins of firs and larches and sprawling pastures.
We are in the heart of the Alta Valsesia Natural Park, understanding here, more than elsewhere, how precious environmental conservation is and how respect and constant care must be given to the mountain as expressed here. The Park has also opened, within a well-preserved Walser house, the Natural History Museum.
The natural scenery of Carcoforo is enchanting but its residential settlement is also harmonious, perhaps dating back to the time of Walser colonization.
One always reaches Carcoforo while following theEgua, which flows here over wide plains, pastures, and gentle slopes, which have become a paradise for cross-country skiing.
A sunny green basin frames the village, among basins of firs and larches and sprawling pastures.
Climbing towards the center, between ancient cobblestones and narrow passages between typical houses, one reaches the small neighborhood where are located close to each other, the Parish Church of Santa Croce, the Oratory of the Madonna delle Grazie and the Parish House.
Santa Croce dates back to the 1600s and has a sharp bell tower, a characteristic of the village and the basin in which it dominates in every image. In the nearby Oratory of the Grazie, a place of fervent devotion, one can find valuable wooden works by 17th-century Valsesian authors and beautiful stucco work. At Gabbio Grande, at the foot of a gentle mountain ridge, the Madonna della Neve, an 18th-century oratory with a gentle portico and a façade fresco by Orgiazzi.
A careful visit to the village cannot be considered complete without closely noting the existing frescoes still visible on various ancient houses, with scenes of religious life, works of unknown Valsesian craftsmen, small, genuine masterpieces, witnesses of an attachment to the village and a profound faith.
Carcoforo openly and invitingly opens its doors to the more challenging hiking, with the splendid mountain crown that encircles its territory.
Not to be overlooked is the role the village has assumed in the tourist-sports sector, where mountaineering, trekking, sport fishing, cross-country skiing and ski mountaineering find happy expressions.
